Alright, ya’ll. I promised I was going to tackle this in 2016 and here we are. I get so many questions about how to start blogging, and how to make a little money at it, it’s time I get some answers out there (if you are interested in who I am just check out my about section)! I’ve talked to a lot of bloggers and social media pros who feel that there is limited access to information about what other people in the business are doing, and I absolutely agree. There isn’t a corporate office for bloggers, and there’s no water cooler where we get to discuss how much vacation pay someone else is getting. I believe that being transparent about the realities of blogging and making money in non-traditional ways via social media, can help everyone participating. Those that are new can know what to expect, and more seasoned pros don’t end up underpaid for their hard work.
Blogging has changed my life. It’s created an outlet for me to be myself and get support, while also bringing in extra income. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and interact with people who I don’t believe I would have met otherwise, and even more importantly I’ve built some great friendships. But blogging isn’t a magical DIY career. It’s important to have a realistic picture of what you want to accomplish and if that’s feasible. So here’s the deal, when all is said and done since April I’ve only made around $5,000 (+ some decent swag) from blogging. Ya’ll, we aren’t living lavishly. We don’t take vacations, we don’t have fancy things, and we enjoy living a fairly humble life. And I’m not sure I could have even made that much if I was working a full time job. I dedicate a ton of time to creating my “brand”, and honestly I’m not sure how other bloggers who work 9-5 jobs are able to put out so much content. I do have a part time job which requires little time during the week, which makes making so little much less uncomfortable.
Now, I am not telling you that to discourage you. Remember, I started blogging in April 2015, and by next April my income will nearly triple from what I’m making now (if everything continues to go as expected). It’s absolutely worth it, and I believe I’m slowly seeing the fruits of my labor, but the reality is this does not happen over night, and you’ve got to be prepared to not have immediate pay-off. At the same time, when starting out, you want to set yourself up to monetize as soon as possible. It’s not necessarily easy, but with a little help it’s not exactly hard either.
So…. let’s get started!!!! New articles will be up every week about a new subject regarding blogging! I’m looking forward to sharing all this info with you!!!
